An unknown family poses in front of the Dixie's pilothouse in 1917. Captain Joe Breeck is sitting in the pilothouse at the pilotwheel. "Breeck Island" can be seen thru the pilothouse windows in the center of this photo, in the extreme background. Joe Breeck lived in a house on the island during this period. The Dixie would be winched out onto the island's sandbar during the winters. The wooden hull had to be re-caulked with oil-soaked hemp (known as oakum) each spring before launching.
